Born on Christmas Eve, Kiyomi has unique mitochondria, which, throughout the ages have secretly plotted against humanity. In the story, she marries a doctor by the name of Toshiaki Nagashima and they are a relatively happy couple until their first year anniversary.

On this day mitochondria happen to take possession of helpless Kiyomi and force her to crash the family car into a phone booth. With her life in the balance, the mitochondria decide to set their plans into motion.

Kiyomi is portrayed as a beautifully smart young woman who, through various experiences as a child and adult, realizes that she's very special indeed. Unfortunately her uniqueness is also a curse, the life form inside her manipulating her life to such a degree that even her feelings may not be her own.

As one of the most highly respected scientists in his field Dr. Nagashima is obsessed with his work and study on Mitochondria. Even his first discussion with his future wife was about the mysteries of the tiny organelle. After his wife’s unfortunate and premature death, however, his obsession takes a downward spiral as he fixates on bringing her back.

This, to Kiyomi's rogue mitochondria, is key to their plan. It’s only after his wife’s recreated body makes love to him does he figure out just how deep the rabbit hole goes. By then, he has no choice but to follow things through to their conclusion.

Mariko is a young girl of only fourteen, cursed with a disease that led to renal failure. Even after a year of dialysis and finally receiving a kidney from her reluctant father, it fails. Not naturally however. Her age, peer pressure and cruel taunts by heartless bullies are too much for the youngster. She stops taking the medication, but far from solving her problems, she ends up back where she started. Forced back onto dialysis, the thought of 'trying again' is almost unbearable, even when she is matched to the 'perfect' donor.

All in all, she is young, scared of the world and very much a victim of all her own confused thoughts. Unfortunately refusing to speak, forces her to face a danger that puts her in the centre of something more horrific than bullies, more disturbing than her paternal relations ever would.

Teased about her height as a child, Asakura became somewhat of a beautiful but quiet woman, preferring the emotional shelter of Dr. Nagashima rather than her peers. Due to this closeness he holds her in high regard, helping her with her research and big 'Liver Cell' speech.

Unfortunately the mitochondrial project she had been working on with for Dr. Nagashima rebels, possessing her. Asakura, now its new host suddenly finds herself telling the audience expecting her speech about humanity's end.

With that done the mitochondria discard her body like dead meat, setting it on fire just for show. She does survive mind you, but is left with numerous scars as well as a mystery that is as unique as her experience.

He is 40 years young but appears younger due to his prideful appearance. All around he seems to exude patience and a sense of calmness, but gets frustrated when Mariko begins showing signs of rejection once again. He can not work out why this would happen, nor why the girl has horrible nightmares or refuses at most times to speak.

Mitochondria Eve - Mitochondrial Eve is the centre point and most pivotal character of the story. She claims to have originated from the evolutionary ooze created millions of years prior to any complex type of life form and is the undisputed villain, devising and methodically following through with her plan to rid the world humans.

In the novel she is calculated and devious, carrying herself with a regal ease as if epitomizing the perfect queen. Darker than the film version, she is all kinds of sinewy and gritty, reminding the reader of their base instincts.

As one of Tohsiaki’s closest colleagues he is approached by Toshiaki and asked an almost unforgivable favor; to take the liver from the man's wife's dying body. He agrees, at first, calling upon his own assistant and performing the operation. Soon after however, he begins to regret this decision, eventually confronting Toshiaki about the actions. What he is told, disgusts him, but even arguing that a 'Cell is just a cell' is not enough to change the course of Toshiaki's fate.
